1) Il y a toujours un prix culturel à payer lors d’une « révolution » technologique
2) Il y a toujours une forme d’iniquité quant aux bénéfices que procurent les technologies
3) Les nouvelles technologies posent des défis épistémologiques
4) Les changements technologiques ne s’additionnent pas, ils modifient de manière écologique leur environnement
5) Les technologies atteignent éventuellement un stade mythique et deviennent difficiles à contrôler et à remettre en question
Larry Cuban on School Reform and Classroom Practice
Neil Postman gave this talk in 1998. A scholar who worked at New York University for over four decades, Postman’s first book (co-authored with Charles Weingartner), Teaching as a Subversive Activity (1969) I read as a teacher. He has written extensively about the impact of television and other technologies on culture, education, and life. He died in 2003.
I call my talk Five Things We Need to Know About Technological Change. I base these ideas on my thirty years of studying the history of technological change but I do not think these are academic or esoteric ideas. They are to the sort of things everyone who is concerned with cultural stability and balance should know and I offer them to you in the hope that you will find them useful in thinking about the effects of technology on religious faith.
